Unless you have been living under a rock for the past year, you have either seen, heard, or been told about the powerful and savvy video sharing community Vimeo. In short Vimeo is an online video community where users post, share, and comment on others videos. There is a rating system for each newly posted video and to top it all off, these fantastic films can be turned on from standard video mode to HD with a simple click of a button.

At first visit Vimeo seems like it would be only a community for visual directors, producers, and designers alike. But take a deeper look into the site and you will find things that every average, day-to-day internet user would enjoy. In this list we will focus on what we consider the top 6 videos currently on Vimeo and the key aspect for each that would entice any audience.

1. HD

It was a challenge narrowing down the top 6 features of Vimeo, but by and large the HD option on their videos is the selling point to this site. With this beautiful option you can simply turn on (or off) the HD pixel perfect clarity with a simple click of a button. In our opinion this feature has been the key to the success of this user generated site. With the HD option you can also view any video full screen and sit back and watch with a clarity that would rival most modern television screens.

2. Music

Now that we have addressed the wonderful HD option of Vimeo, the obvious next choice to any user would be to search directed or live music videos from their favorite bands or genres. Vimeo also shines in this category. There are many bands now shooting their concert footage in HD format and what better place to put these videos than a community that caters to this. From Nine Inch Nails to Jay-Z to Cradle of Filth, this community has a slew of music footage that is definitely worth checking out.

3. Short Films

Another great thing about Vimeo is you never know what you are going to get. It seems some of the highest ranked videos are short films created by a sole company (or team) that specializes in video production. Many of the short films have hardly any dialogue but these users know that is not the point of them. It is 100% artistic expression and are always very fun to watch and more times than not leave you wanting more. Another highlight of the short films are the scores added to them, they always go above and beyond to capture a mood.

4. Animation

Animation is always a hit or miss avenue that cannot deliver the right emotion if not executed well. One of the most amazing things about the Vimeo community is that there is an unbelievable amount of illustrators and animators among the community. To a member this is a fantastic way to reach people with amazing animation skills that they may have never found before. To the average internet user they are just plain fun to watch.

5. Experimentalists

While delving deeper and deeper into the site you will notice a whole new avenue of videos that you would not expect from the site. Experimental videos. These are videos that members of the community submit just tinkering with their skills and adding a little music or ambiance to them (or leaving them dead quiet for dramatic effect). At first to the general user it will seem a little confusing but once you get hypnotized by an experimental video like the one posted above you will be hooked. This is quickly becoming one of our favorite features on the site.

6. Fan-Made Videos

We established earlier the obvious impact of music on society, but what about the visual aspect of music? Another great thing about Vimeo is it gives any fan a chance with a background of directing or creating music videos to test out their latest creations to songs they like and have a vision for. This final product pays off in two huge aspects. One, it introduces the up and coming film-maker to a broader audience by the visuals for the song. Two, it helps out a band that might already have other videos on Vimeo to start a whole new chain reaction for a fan base. We have found a handful of new bands and artists from simply viewing fan made videos and we know we aren’t the only ones.

Much more important: You have privacy options to effectively share your videos to just an intended audience (simplest: use a password). This never worked with Youtube. The UI is good, also.
